Therapy vs Counseling

Before searching “therapist near me” or “counseling near me,” it is important to differentiate between therapy and counseling. Therapy is an in-depth and complex process whereas counseling has a specific focus and is short term. Therapy is usually practiced by a psychologist. A psychologist has a doctoral degree and has extensive schooling and training in the therapeutic process. Therapy takes into account the entire individual’s experience.
Counseling is traditionally practiced by an individual who has a counseling degree or a social work degree. Counseling occurs in educational settings, hospital settings, and rehabilitation settings among others. Counseling is case focused and time limited.
I practice therapy from an insight-oriented lens. Insight is the central focus of therapy; insight into an individual’s personal history, family dynamics and current functioning. The process of understanding the self and making connections to past and present patterns is fundamental for personal growth and change. Therapy does encompass short term goals and coping skills, but that is within the context of long term, sustainable change. The process of therapy can be daunting, yet the outcomes can be life altering.
