Starting therapy

How can therapy help me?

Therapy can offer support, perspective, and practical skills for depression, anxiety, grief, relationship problems, family conflict, and stress. Many people also come to understand themselves better: their goals, values, and the patterns that keep repeating. What you gain depends partly on how actively you take part.

I can usually handle my problems. Do I really need therapy?

Everyone goes through hard times, and needing extra support is not a failure. Recognizing that you want a helping hand takes self-awareness. Therapy can help you work through what you are facing now and build tools for the future.

What happens in the first appointment?

Dr. Lehmann will ask about what brings you in, relevant history, and what you hope will change. You can ask about her approach, fees, and scheduling. It is as much a chance for you to see if the fit feels right as it is an assessment.

How long are sessions, and how often will we meet?

Private-pay sessions are billed per clinical hour. Most people meet weekly at first. Some come for a focused, shorter period and others prefer longer-term work; you will decide on pace together.

What is the difference between individual and couples therapy?

Individual therapy is one-on-one and focuses on you, including your part in relationships. Couples therapy includes both partners and focuses on the relationship itself. If you are unsure which fits, ask when you call.

Does Dr. Lehmann see children or teens?

Please ask when you call. The services described on this site are for adults and couples.

Telehealth

Can I have sessions online?

Yes. Telehealth sessions by secure video are available for clients who are located in Michigan at the time of the session.

Can I switch between in-person and telehealth?

Many clients use both. Talk with Dr. Lehmann about what works for your schedule and situation.

Fees and insurance

Do you take insurance?

Dr. Lehmann is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. Private-pay sessions are $220 per clinical hour, and reduced-fee services are available on a limited basis. Call your insurer to check your mental health benefits.

What if I need to cancel?

Please give at least 24 hours' notice. Late cancellations and missed sessions are billed $90 unless due to illness or an emergency.

Privacy and safety

Is what I say in therapy confidential?

Yes, with limited exceptions required by law, such as a serious risk that you will harm yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult. Dr. Lehmann will review these with you. She will not share information with anyone else, including your physician, without your written permission.

Can I email Dr. Lehmann about my situation?

Email and the website form are fine for scheduling and general questions. Please do not send health details, diagnoses, insurance numbers, or card numbers by email; ordinary email is not secure.

What if I need help between sessions or in a crisis?

The practice does not provide emergency or after-hours services. In a crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), text HOME to 741741, call Common Ground at 1-800-231-1127, or call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

What about medication?

Psychologists in Michigan do not prescribe medication. For some people, a combination of therapy and medication works best; Dr. Lehmann can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist with your permission.
