New Clients: What to Expect

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Here is how the process works, from your first message to your first session.

Is this practice a good fit?

Dr. Lehmann works with adults in individual therapy and with couples in couples therapy. The practice may be a good fit if you:

  • Want to understand the patterns behind what you are going through, not only manage symptoms
  • Are dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship or family conflict, intimacy concerns, or the emotional impact of cancer
  • Can attend daytime appointments Monday through Thursday, in Franklin or by telehealth from Michigan

The practice is not set up for emergencies, and it does not offer evening or weekend appointments. If you need a higher level of care, Dr. Lehmann will help you find it.

How to get started

  1. 1

    Get in touch

Call (248) 270-2030, email wellness@drlauralehmann.com, or use the contact form. Share your name, how to reach you, whether you prefer in-person or telehealth, and your general availability. There is no need to describe your history yet.

  2. 2

    A short conversation

Dr. Lehmann will get back to you to hear briefly what you are looking for, answer questions about fees and insurance, and talk about whether she is the right fit. If she is not, she will try to point you somewhere that is.

  3. 3

    Paperwork

Before your first session you will receive the intake forms. Complete them and bring them to your first appointment, or follow the instructions Dr. Lehmann gives you. Please do not email completed forms.

  4. 4

    Your first session

The first session is mostly about getting to know you: what brought you in, relevant history, and what you hope will be different. You are also getting to know Dr. Lehmann; it is fine to ask how she works.

After the first session

Most people meet regularly, often weekly at first. How long therapy lasts depends on your goals: some people come for a focused period, others prefer longer-term work. You can talk about pace and progress with Dr. Lehmann at any point.

Hours and replies

Daytime appointments Monday through Thursday. No evening or weekend appointments. Messages are answered during office hours, so a message sent on a Friday or over the weekend is usually answered the following week.

Confidentiality and privacy

What you discuss in therapy is confidential, with limited exceptions required by law, such as a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult. Dr. Lehmann will go over these with you at the start. With your written permission, she can speak with other providers, such as your physician.

Please keep clinical details out of email and the website form. Ordinary email is not a secure way to share health information, diagnoses, insurance numbers, or card details. Save those for your session or a phone call.
